What is Alcoholism

Definition: Alcoholism, also known as alcohol use disorder (AUD), is a chronic disease characterized by uncontrolled drinking and preoccupation with alcohol. It includes both alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence. Impact: Affects physical health, mental well-being, relationships, and daily functioning.



Causes of Alcoholism

Genetic Factors: Family history of alcoholism increases risk. Environmental Factors: Peer pressure, stress, and cultural norms. Psychological Factors: Mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety. Biological Factors: Differences in how individuals metabolize alcohol.

Symptoms of Alcoholism

PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS Increased tolerance to alcohol. Withdrawal symptoms when not drinking. Physical dependence. BEHAVIORAL SYMPTOMS Drinking more or longer than intended. Inability to cut down or control drinking. Neglecting responsibilities at home, work, or school. Continuing to drink despite negative consequences. Giving up activities once enjoyed.



Treatment & Management

Detoxification: Medically supervised withdrawal to safely remove alcohol from the body. Medications: To reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms (e.g., naltrexone, acamprosate, disulfiram). THERAPIES Cognitive Behavioral Therapy : To change drinking behaviors and manage triggers. Motivational Enhancement Therapy : To increase motivation to change. Family Therapy: To address family dynamics and support recovery. Support Groups: Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), SMART Recovery, and other peer support groups.
